Mark DeLuzio discusses the absence of engineers from the Gemba in both manufacturing and design. He also discusses the sin of engineering, which he calls “Catalogue Engineers.”
Love this concept. I’ve been interviewing front line supervisors in production and from separate conversations and rooms emerges a common theme: procurement is clueless as to what goes on down here.
I’ve dreamed of being in a position where I could create development experiences of ‘cross-training’ where the people ordering these raw materials spend some time understanding what the raw materials do and how mistakes or changes to the raw materials directly impacts the lives of those responsible for manufacturing. I’m finally in that position in the hierarchy of the organization where this goes from conceptual to applied.
